Today class we are all gong to put an ICE contact in our phones. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. First responders are trained to look in a victims cell phone for an ICE contact. Many new phones now come with an ICE feature already built in. An ICE contact speaks for you, when you cannot.
To add your ICE contact simply (1) create a new entry in your contact list, and enter the word ICE (all caps) in the (last) name field. Then using the existing fields, add your full name, birthdate, blood type and any pertinent medical information.
(2) Add your primary contact. Identify their relationship to you, their name, and their contact info for home, office and cell.
(3) Add your out of town contact. This should be someone everyone in your family knows as the designated out of town contact. Choose someone who lives outside of your geographical area. Add their name and contact numbers including a cellphone.
On this second day of National Preparedness Month, we encourage you to take the time to add this important contact in your phone and make sure to ask the people around you to do the same. Creating an ICE contact is something important you can do right now to make a marked improvement in your safety and the overall health of our community and country. Life happens. Be prepared.
