“What’s going on?” That is the question on everyone’s mind when the electricity gets cut off. Communication to and from the outside world in an emergency can play a vital role in your survival and well-being in a difficult situation. Your ability to hear important news about  your area is critical to make decisions about leaving where you are.

Of course, we favor a radio with good auditory quality and a handcrank, but love the ones with the ability to charge your phone. Choose a radio can do double duty, and give you back power to charge your phones and other devices if necessary.

Had the pleasure of almost getting thrown out of someone’s office yesterday when I tried to make the point that perhaps we have a way to get people to prepare for an emergency against their will. He was some VC Angel who’s only interest, rightfully so, is making money.  Education he bellowed, is too damn expensive! Here’s the worst part, he’s right. Chasing this dream of trying to get people to transcend their  resistance to emergency preparedness is a tough road to hoe. Focusing on the part of my business, as a WBE that works with the government, corporate and  incentive business is a smarter plan.  Am I ready  to abandon my One Woman Crusade To Make America Safer, nah. I just have to focus on the other parts of the business so I can dabble in emergency education.

Alan Napier's batteries ran out in the Mole People. Don't let this happen to you.

In Case of Emergency, the first thing I reach for is a flashlight – even if there was a power disruption during the day chances are you will need some lighting to help find the rest of your emergency supplies!

Creating a proper emergency kit and plan requires some dedicated tools. Leave a directional flashlight by the front door or garage. Consider adding a flashlight to each bedroom.  For comfortable emergency preparedness everyone should have a light source, even if it’s just a light stick, but in the event of even a minor inconvenience, like a power disruption, where you can stay comfortably in your home, lanterns are a great addition. When the lights do down, four people sitting around with two directional flashlights is not comfortable.  Creating an environment where everyone can stay calm is key.

Choose an array of directional flashlights and lanterns, keep some in your emergency kit and scatter some around your home, near doors and bedsides. Add additional flashlights and some light sticks to your emergency kit for added precaution. Add candles and matches. All lighting is not created equal. Make sure the lighting you choose will perform well when needed. Check batteries every year on your birthday. It will be the best gift you give yourself.  Sign up at ice-qube.com for a free annual reminder. We will even send a little gift to encourage you to move this to the top of your to-do list.

Don’t forget to add lighting to your car. Consider all the times we get into a car at night. This is a critical support tool.

And here is something I learned the hard way. Add a small flashlight to your toiletries when traveling. When the lights go out in a hotel, they don’t always have enough supplies for all the guests.

For this first day of National Preparedness Month our  Ice-Qube Tip for the day is Tend your Lighting! In an emergency, whether you get to stay in your home or are forced to leave to family, hotel or shelter,  proper lighting can make everything easier.
